Rules

without comments

Freedom is good, but we need rules to create an effective learning environment. The following rules (with reasons given) apply in all the courses under the IT/Math/Science Team.

Rule #1: Attend every class.

Students have to attend 80% of the classes in order to sit for the examination, unless appropriate medical proof is provided. Those who are absent in the final examination due to unsatisfactory attendance record or other reasons are given an F as final grade, regardless of the total score.

Why?

Student participation is important in liberal arts education. A pass in our course indicates that the student has participated in most of our class activities. If you have difficulties showing up in our classes, please contact your teachers immediately. Please also read section Section 12 Class Attendance and Leave of Absence under Regulations Governing Associate Degree Studies in the College Prospectus.

Rule #2: Come to the class on time.

Take note of the starting time of the class. A class that starts at 09:30 really means 09:30,  not 09:35 or 09:40. The teachers would expect the students to be ready for the class when it starts. Late comers will receive a mark penalty subject to the teacher’s discretion.

Why?

This rule is set for a few reasons:

  • You interrupt your teacher and disturb your classmates if you enter the classroom right in the middle of the class.
  • You may miss important announcements.
  • You lose time, which is equivalent to a loss of $$$ in some sense as well. Time management is important for anyone who want to be successful.

Please also read section Section 12 Class Attendance and Leave of Absence under Regulations Governing Associate Degree Studies in the College Prospectus.

Rule #3: Submit everything on time.

Late submission of homework assignments and projects will lead to up to 100% mark deduction. Refer to the corresponding course websites for details.

Why?

  • Some students work very hard in order to submit their works on time. It is unfair and discouraging to them if others are allowed to submit their works late.
  • Deadline is an important source of pressure that will keep you working hard through out your study. If you do not respect the deadlines, you are giving up the opportunity to improve yourself.

Rule #4: Do not copy homeworks.

Plagiarism is a serious offence in our courses. Teachers would impose heavy punishment on the students concerned (including the source) if plagiarism is found.

Why?

The reasons are similar to that of rule #3.

  • Some students work very hard in order to submit their works on their own. It is unfair and discouraging to them if others are allowed to copy from their fellow students or any other sources.
  • A difficult homework is an important source of pressure that will keep you working hard through out your study. If you do not force yourself to complete the homeworks on your own, you are giving up the opportunity to improve yourself.
  • Be honest. Respect yourself and your teachers.

Rule #5: Be honest in tests and examinations.

Unless otherwise specified, calculators, PDAs, electronic dictionaries, mobile phones and other advanced portable devices are strictly prohibited in tests and examinations. Students who attempt to use these devices in tests and examinations for any purpose without permission are considered as cheating. Students who cheat in the tests or examinations are subject to disqualification.

Why?

  • This rule is a student regulation set by the College. It is a very serious offense to cheat in tests and examinations. If cheating is found, our teachers must follow the College procedures to impose punishments. We simply have no choice. Please read section Section 13 Conduct of Examinations under Regulations Governing College Examinations in the College Prospectus.
  • As for the above rules, we do not want to discourage those who work hard to study for the tests and examinations.
  • Tests and examinations are important sources of pressure that will keep you working hard through out your study. If you do not force yourself to study hard for them, you are giving up the opportunity to improve yourself.
  • Again, be honest. Respect yourself and your teachers.

Rule #6: Follow the other rules written in the College Prospectus.

Other rules are written in the College Prospectus. There are only 10+ pages so please read them carefully.
